Why a local book services directory?
The publishing landscape has changed dramatically. Self-publishing is no longer a last resort — it is a strategic choice embraced by thousands of authors across the United Kingdom. Yet finding reliable professionals remains a challenge, especially outside London.
Stridebook was built to address that gap for Scottish authors and publishers. Every listing on our resource board has been reviewed for quality, professionalism, and fair pricing. We prioritise providers who understand the nuances of the Scottish literary scene, from Gaelic-language typesetting to Highland-themed cover illustration.
Our directory is free to browse. We earn a small referral when you engage a listed provider, but this never inflates the price you pay. Transparency matters to us as much as it matters to you.
Directory principles
- Every provider is manually vetted
- Pricing displayed before you enquire
- No pay-to-rank listings
- Author reviews verified by our team
- Updated quarterly for accuracy
- Scotland-first, UK-wide reach
Spotlight stories
From draft to bookshelf in twelve weeks
When Fiona Mackay finished her debut novel, she had no idea where to start with publishing. Through our directory she connected with an editor in Stirling and a designer in Perth. Twelve weeks later, her book sat on shelves in three independent bookshops.
Short-run printing for a community project
The Upton Toy Heritage Society needed 150 copies of a local history compilation. Our listed print provider delivered hardback copies with full-colour plates at a price that kept the project within its community-funded budget.
Mentoring that changed a writing career
After two abandoned novels, Graham Petrie signed up for six sessions of author mentoring. His mentor helped him restructure his narrative, find his voice, and ultimately secure representation with a literary agent based in Edinburgh.
Common questions about our book services
Each provider submits a portfolio, at least two client references, and proof of relevant qualifications or experience. Our editorial team reviews every application and conducts a short interview before listing. We also perform annual re-checks to ensure standards are maintained.
Yes. Browsing the directory, reading provider profiles, and accessing our editorial content costs nothing. We receive a small referral fee from providers when a successful engagement begins, but this is never passed on to you as the author.
Absolutely. Use the contact form below or email us directly. We will send you our provider application pack, which includes the vetting criteria and timeline. Most applications are processed within ten working days.
Our primary focus is Scotland, but we also include UK-wide providers who have demonstrated experience working with Scottish authors or publishers. Remote services such as editing and e-book conversion can be delivered from anywhere, so geography is less of a barrier for those categories.
We take complaints seriously. Contact us with details of the issue and we will investigate. If a provider consistently falls below our standards, they are removed from the directory. Our goal is to maintain a trustworthy resource for the entire community.
